The fix is prevention: clean oil, short intervals, and a PCV valve replacement every 60,000 miles. Do not use an engine flush on a high-mileage 1MZ unless the service history is clean, because a sudden sludge release can clog the oil pickup screen.
Oil consumption shows up as blue smoke at start-up or a low dipstick at the next oil change. On a high-mileage 1MZ, leaking valve cover gaskets and a stuck PCV valve are more common than ring failure. Replacing those parts is straightforward and keeps oil off the exhaust manifold.
